Digital Millenium Copyright Act Ruling—”Means Little?”

Hmn, I’m interested in hearing more about this. That is, what does this ruling really mean to Twitch streamers, major YouTube game reviewers, YouTube video content creators, etc. “Means little” seems to be a rather simplistic analysis. The “Dancing Baby” was ruled fair use of a copyrighted song. That seems significant to me. . .

Evolving Business Models and the Dragon Nosing its Way into the Tent

“Game players are getting used to being able to try out games for free, and having plenty of options on how and where to play – and what to spend money on. Free-to-play isn’t just one specific business model – the term encompasses a wide variety of models, and in some cases it’s very similar to the old practice of providing free…

Biggest Acquisition Since Casino Hit Video Games?

Holy cow! This is the biggest piece of acquisition news in my opinion in the game industry in a long time. Big acquisitions have been happening for years, but they happen, and then you don’t hear anything about them again. I predict this one will be different. Jesse Schell Illuminates About VR Direction

Awesome article with Jesse Schell about VR—virtual reality and hardware/software design innovation. The article really gets into the market realities. I’ve been saying this for years—the three most important words in video games are install base, install base, install base.

But I’ve been wondering lately if my three most important words weren’t going to become obsolete with the proliferation of mobile and gaming platforms everywhere. It would no longer matter how many people bought the…

Eye Tracking Tech as Game Controller

Interesting article about a recent game jam in London using eye tracking tech as an in-game controller. The author describes gameplay mechanics that worked best for the different teams and his own team’s problems designing a strategy game using eye tracking controls.

Cool idea for a game jam with a sponsor showcasing their products and allowing design teams to try it out for a weekend! It’d be great to see that with more hardware/software companies.

Kudos to…

The Coolest Live Video Game Event I’ve Ever Seen

I attended one of the most special video game industry events of my career last night. Naughty Dog and Sony produced “The Last of Us—One Night Live” in Santa Monica at the Broad Stage Theater. It was a spectacular display of the amazing art, craft, talent, storytelling, mixed media, collaboration and technological wonder that exists in video games. To celebrate the release of The Last of Us Remastered on PS4,…

Direct Response Mobile Gaming

My first job in advertising straight out of grad school 19 years ago was with direct response (direct mail) agency Brierley & Partners. Now Hal Brierley is a key investor in a company specializing in video game player retention! I find that so weird!Small world I guess…
