Nintendo Switch Reveal

I’m interested in the Nintendo Switch. I’ve been wanting gameplay you could take with you from home screen to mobile to multiplayer for a long time. (Didn’t think of to eSports, but that would be amazing!) However, the hardware and processor seems questionable. Yet, if it works somewhat, it’ll drive others to do it better and bring better content outside of the Nintendo ecosystem to other hardware manufacturers. This could be very interesting for…

eSports is Getting Competitive

Interesting. I have no opinion on the lack of consultation with most stockholders. I’m mostly interested in ATVI’s larger foray into eSports. At first glance, this seems like an acquisition of users and other assets, but not necessarily IP. I don’t know what MLG has in terms of IP, if anything. Cursory research shows it’s mainly an online platform. It seems ATVI would mostly like expertise and the ability to plug its own IP…

MOBA Users’ Psych Questionnaires—Privacy Issue?

This is fascinating. I’m not sure if the comment about the specific psych tests they’re using is correct, but the overall ethical question is an interesting one. As part of the DARPA serious games project I worked on, I implemented quite a bit of usability testing, some of which took place at the University of Central Florida. Free-to-play isn’t just one specific business model – the term encompasses a wide variety of models, and in some cases it’s very similar to the old practice of providing free…

[a]listdaily Finds Golden Swan

“What’s a golden swan? That’s a rare, fortunate event that has major consequences…a metaphor that “describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight,”…. That describes many of the megahit games very well indeed – companies tend to think very highly of themselves after creating such a megahit, but history shows that caution (and conservative spending) is indicated.”

Direct Response Mobile Gaming

My first job in advertising straight out of grad school 19 years ago was with direct response (direct mail) agency Brierley & Partners. Now Hal Brierley is a key investor in a company specializing in video game player retention! I find that so weird!Small world I guess…

Better. Stronger. Faster. . . Now?

We have the technology. We have the capability. Better. Stronger. Faster.

I’m so excited to hear about PlayStation Now announced this week at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sony and Gaikai have finally done what I’ve been thinking about, hoping for and talking about for years—persistent video gameplay cross platform. That is, play a game on your PlayStation Vita. Then pick up where you left off on your PS4, then go to…
